“Was He Dhritarashtra?” Bhupen Borah Slams Assam CM Over Misogynistic Remarks

Guwahati, May 1: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today, condemning his alleged “misogynistic and offensive” remarks about women securing jobs during the Congress regime.

At a press conference, Borah denounced Sarma’s controversial statement at a public meeting in Borsola, where the CM reportedly claimed that women had to “trade their virginity” for government jobs between 2001 and 2015. Calling the remark an “insult to hardworking women,” Borah questioned Sarma’s own role during that period, asking, “Was he Dhritarashtra, turning a blind eye?”

Drawing a sharp parallel, Borah ranked Sarma “fourth after Duryodhan, Ravan, and Lora Roja”—figures infamous for disrespecting women. He defended the women appointed during Congress rule, highlighting their contributions as doctors, professors, and nurses, selected purely on merit.

Borah also reminded the public that Sarma was a key minister in the same Congress government, sharing photographs of him handing appointment letters to women. “Before pointing fingers, he should introspect,” Borah asserted, demanding an apology for the “shameful” comments.

The controversy has sparked outrage, with opposition leaders and women’s groups condemning the CM’s remarks as regressive and demeaning.
