Political Row Erupts as Himanta Questions MP’s Kids’ Citizenship, Congress Counters
A major controversy has erupted after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the minor children of a sitting MP from Assam are “no longer citizens of India.” Though he did not name the MP, the remarks are seen as targeting Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.
In a social media post on May 1, Sarma stated: “I say this with full responsibility — the minor children of one MP from Assam are no longer Indian citizens. But this is just the beginning. More will be revealed.”
Congress Fires Back, Cites BJP Ministers’ Families
The Kerala Congress hit back, questioning if Sarma’s allegations were indirectly aimed at BJP leaders’ children, including:
- External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s two children
- Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s children
- Hardeep Singh Puri’s family
- Sudha Murthy (wife of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy)
“Dear Himanta, are you talking about Jaishankar’s kids? Or Piyush Goyal’s? Be specific before making such claims,” the Congress posted.
Earlier Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi
This is not the first time Sarma has targeted Gogoi. On April 28, he claimed to have “clear evidence” of Gogoi’s travel to Pakistan and Nepal, promising to reveal details by September.
In another post, Sarma questioned whether a “Congress MP” had stayed in Pakistan for 15 days and if his wife receives a salary from a Pakistani NGO.
Escalating Political Tensions
The war of words highlights rising political tensions ahead of the next election cycle, with both parties engaging in a fierce battle of narratives.
