Assam BJP Chief Seeks Akhil Gogoi’s Disqualification Over ‘Divisive’ Remarks, Submits Memo to EC

Guwahati, [Date]: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam has intensified its demand for the disqualification of Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi from contesting future elections, accusing him of making “extremist communal remarks” that threaten social harmony in the state.

BJP Assam President and Darrang-Udalguri MP Dilip Saikia led a delegation to the Election Commission (EC), submitting a memorandum urging strict action against Gogoi. The move follows Gogoi’s controversial statement allegedly urging Muslims not to vote for the BJP in upcoming polls.

“Insult to Assamese Pride”

Saikia condemned Gogoi’s remarks as “divisive and inflammatory,” stating that such rhetoric tarnishes Assam’s cultural legacy. “Sivasagar, which Gogoi represents, is the land of the Ahoms who resisted Mughal invasions. It’s shameful that an elected representative from this region is now aligning with such divisive politics,” Saikia said.

He accused Gogoi of indulging in “appeasement politics” and asserted that self-respecting Assamese citizens reject such statements.

BJP’s Formal Complaint to EC

The BJP memorandum demands Gogoi’s disqualification under electoral laws, citing violations of the Model Code of Conduct. The party argues that his remarks could incite communal tensions and disrupt Assam’s social fabric.

Saikia on Congress Leader’s Attack

Separately, Saikia condemned the recent attack on Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi’s car but dismissed allegations linking the BJP or Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to the incident. He hinted at internal Congress conflicts, suggesting the attack may have been staged due to discontent over ticket distribution.

EC’s Response Awaited

The Election Commission is yet to respond to the BJP’s complaint. Meanwhile, political tensions escalate in Assam ahead of upcoming elections, with opposition parties accusing the BJP of suppressing dissent.
