The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Kamrup has granted bail to senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar, as the police failed to present sufficient evidence against him. However, he will have to spend tonight in jail due to the inability to submit the bail bond. Tomorrow (Thursday), upon submitting the required bail bond, he will be released and can walk free under the open sky.
The incident stems from corruption allegations against Domboru Saikia, the Managing Director of the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank. While gathering information about a protest program organized by the Assam Jatiya Parishad’s National Youth Wing, Dilwar Hussain, the assistant secretary of the Guwahati Press Club, was summoned via phone to Panbazar Police Station and detained. Later, he was arrested, and a case was registered against him under Section 351(2)/3(1)(r) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 2015.
His arrest sparked widespread criticism, with various sections of society condemning the government and the administration. Today, several journalists protested in front of the police station, demanding his release. Currently, his legal team is taking necessary steps for his release, and he is likely to be freed tomorrow after completing the formalities. Further updates on the matter are expected in the coming days.
