Guwahati, March 25, 2025 – Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Tuesday issued an apology to the people of the state following chaotic scenes inside and outside the House on Monday, which allegedly left Deputy Speaker Numal Momin injured.
Daimary announced an inquiry by the assembly’s privilege committee into Momin’s claim that Congress MLA Nurul Huda and others assaulted him during a protest against a ruling BJP legislator.
Uproar in Assam Assembly
The unrest began when Congress MLAs staged a demonstration inside the assembly building on Monday, blocking corridors leading to the Speaker’s and Deputy Speaker’s chambers. The protest targeted BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who last week verbally abused opposition members and allegedly attempted to physically attack them.
Congress legislators attended the session wearing black attire as a mark of protest. Before proceedings began, they held a sit-in outside the Speaker’s office, demanding action against Kurmi.
Alleged Assault on Deputy Speaker
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma interrupted the Question Hour, stating that Momin had sent him a WhatsApp message claiming he was attacked by Congress MLA Nurul Huda outside the House and was hospitalized.
“I request the Speaker to file a police case since it happened outside the House. Let the police investigate,” Sarma said.
However, visuals showed Momin attending the session before leaving shortly after. Speaker Daimary assured that officials were examining the incident.
Speaker Orders Probe
Daimary condemned the disruptions and ordered a privilege committee investigation into the alleged assault. The House was adjourned amid the uproar.
The political tension in Assam Assembly continues to escalate, with opposition Congress demanding accountability for Kurmi’s behavior while the BJP accuses Congress of violence against the Deputy Speaker.
