Assam’s GMCH to Become 5,000-Bed Mega Hospital with Advanced Cancer Treatment
Guwahati, Assam – In a major healthcare overhaul, the Assam government is set to demolish the old Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) to construct a state-of-the-art 3,000-bed facility, transforming it into the second-largest hospital in India with a total capacity of 5,000 beds, second only to Patna.
New Hospitals & Super-Specialty Upgrades
The move follows the recent inauguration of three new hospitals:
- Pragjyotishpur Hospital
- Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) – to be upgraded into a Super-Specialty Hospital with facilities for liver and kidney transplants
- Mother & Child Hospital – expected to open by October-end
Proton Beam Therapy – A First for Northeast
GMCH will soon introduce proton beam therapy, an advanced cancer treatment available only in Chennai and Mumbai. Assam will be the third state in India to offer this precision therapy, which targets tumors while sparing healthy tissues. The government is procuring a ₹500 crore machine to establish this facility.
Guwahati as a Regional Healthcare Hub
This mega-upgrade aligns with Assam’s vision to make Guwahati a medical hub for Northeast India, offering cutting-edge treatments and expanded patient care.
With these developments, GMCH is poised to become a premier healthcare destination, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for advanced medical care.
