Assam Destroys Drugs Worth ₹472.51 Crore in Massive Statewide Anti-Drug Drive
Guwahati, July 12: In one of the largest anti-drug destruction drives in its history, the Assam government on Sunday scientifically destroyed narcotic substances worth ₹472.51 crore across multiple districts as part of its mission to build a drug-free Assam.
The state-level programme was inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Assam Police Battalion campus in Daulashal, Nalbari district. During the event, the Chief Minister personally operated a road roller to crush a large quantity of seized cough syrup bottles, symbolising the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking.
Sharing details of the operation on social media, the Chief Minister said that the destruction process of the seized narcotics would take nearly 10 days due to the enormous quantity involved.
He reiterated that the state government remains committed to its fight against narcotics and warned that the campaign against drug traffickers would become even more stringent in the coming days.
Over ₹3,000 Crore Worth of Drugs Seized in Five Years
The Chief Minister revealed that during the last five years, Assam Police has seized narcotics worth more than ₹3,000 crore and arrested over 26,000 drug traffickers under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The event was attended by Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, MLA Narayan Deka and senior Assam Police officials.
Drugs Destroyed During the Statewide Operation
Authorities destroyed a wide range of seized narcotics, including:
- 39.068 kg Morphine worth ₹39.07 crore
- 79.770 kg Opium worth ₹3.98 crore
- 47.1 grams Cocaine worth ₹23.55 lakh
- 19,02,922 Yaba tablets worth ₹79.64 crore
- 58.877 kg Heroin worth ₹117.75 crore
- 2,29,449 bottles of cough syrup worth ₹22.94 crore
- 37,796.34 kg Ganja worth ₹188.98 crore
Massive Drug Destruction Across Assam Districts
The anti-drug campaign was carried out simultaneously in several districts.
Lakhimpur
Police destroyed 151.5 grams of heroin and 1,955.08 kg of ganja at the Hahsara Police Outpost near Lakhimpur town.
Dhemaji
At the police reserve campus in Tulsibari, narcotics worth nearly ₹2.5 crore, including ganja and heroin, were destroyed in the presence of Additional Superintendent of Police Pranjal Bora and a judicial magistrate. Officials appealed to the public and voluntary organisations to help spread awareness against drug abuse among youth.
Barpeta
The Barpeta District Drug Disposal Committee supervised the destruction of narcotics worth ₹5.16 crore at the district police reserve playground. The destroyed items included:
- 1,068 grams of heroin
- 133 kg of ganja
- 58,270 Yaba tablets
- 494 narcotic capsules
- 123 bottles of cough syrup
District Commissioner Navdeep Pathak and Acting Superintendent of Police Samiran Baishya attended the programme. Officials stated that strict legal action would continue against drug traffickers.
Guwahati
The Guwahati Police Commissionerate destroyed seized narcotics collected from East, West and Central Police Districts at two separate locations. A portion was destroyed in Nalbari, while a large quantity of ganja and other narcotics was scientifically incinerated at the Fresh Air Waste Management facility in Chandrapur under the supervision of senior police officers.
Government Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy
The Assam government described the statewide operation as a major milestone in its ongoing campaign against narcotics. Officials said the destruction of seized drugs would prevent them from re-entering the illegal market while sending a strong warning to drug smugglers operating across the state.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying anti-drug operations and ensuring a safer, drug-free future for Assam.
