Meghalaya Mandatory Visitor Registration System: New Rules for Tourists 2026
Meghalaya is set to roll out a mandatory visitor registration system for all tourists and entrants, marking a major step toward stronger border management and enhanced safety in the state.
Under the proposed Meghalaya visitor registration mechanism, every visitor will need to register and undergo thorough identity, antecedents, and purpose-of-visit verification before entering the state. This move closely mirrors the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime already operational in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur.
Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira confirmed the development while speaking to a Shillong-based news portal. “We need a proper registration system because many people enter the state in the name of tourism. We have to examine their documents to verify whether they are genuine Indian citizens or foreign nationals carrying valid papers,” Shira said.
The minister highlighted that the upcoming food court at Umling will function as a key tourist facilitation centre and the primary registration point. Visitors will be able to enjoy restaurant amenities while their registration is processed. Similar registration centres are also planned in other regions, including Berubari in the Garo Hills, to ensure seamless and uniform implementation across Meghalaya.
