AJP Slams Assam University for Excluding Bohag Bihu from 2025 Holiday List, Calls It “Cultural Insult”

AJP Condemns Assam University for Ignoring Bohag Bihu in 2025 Holidays.

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has strongly criticized Assam University for excluding Bohag Bihu—Assam’s most celebrated festival—from its 2025 holiday list, terming the move a “direct insult” to Assamese culture.

In a sharp rebuke, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan accused the university of deliberately undermining the cultural significance of Bohag Bihu. “This is not an oversight but an insult to Assamese identity,” they said.

While Assam University included holidays for Magh Bihu, Makar Sankranti, and Pongal, it ignored Bohag Bihu—despite the Assam government declaring April 14-16 as official holidays. The university, however, marked April 10 for Mahavir Jayanti and April 14 for Ambedkar Jayanti.

The AJP warned that the exclusion risks alienating Assamese-speaking students and deepening regional divides. “Bohag Bihu is the soul of our culture. Denying it recognition is unacceptable,” the leaders stated.

The party has demanded an immediate holiday declaration for Bohag Bihu on April 14 and urged the university to act with cultural sensitivity. “Will Assam University promote unity or insensitivity?” the AJP questioned.

The controversy has sparked outrage, with many calling for swift corrective action.
