Guwahati, April 11: Kamrup Metro district and several parts of Lower Assam experienced intense dust storms on Thursday, turning the skies grey and disrupting daily life. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for multiple districts, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

Weather Warnings in Effect

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted the following districts for severe weather:

  • Lower Assam: Goalpara, South Salmara, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Chirang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bajali, Kokrajhar
  • Central Assam: Light to moderate rain with winds of 30-40 kmph

Residents can expect:

  • Dust storms and thunderstorms
  • Heavy rainfall (50-60 mm)
  • Hailstorms in isolated areas
  • Strong winds (50-60 kmph)

Precautionary Measures Advised

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has urged people to:

Sanjay O’Neill, Senior Meteorologist, explained, “A cyclonic circulation over Northeast India will bring rain for the next five days, with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. However, no major temperature fluctuations are expected.”
