Jorhat, April 9, 2025 – In a prestigious ceremony, Assam Agricultural University (AAU) conferred honorary doctorate degrees on two of India’s most celebrated environmentalists—Jadav Payeng, the “Forest Man of India,” and Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, a globally recognized conservationist known for her work protecting the endangered greater adjutant stork and wetland ecosystems. The honor was bestowed in recognition of their exceptional contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable ecology.
The 25th Convocation of AAU, held at its Jorhat campus, was graced by Assam Governor and University Chancellor Gulab Chand Kataria, who emphasized the urgent need for climate-resilient agricultural practices amid rising global challenges. Highlighting Assam’s agricultural potential, he praised local farmers for producing globally acclaimed products like Assam tea, Majuli rice, and Tezpur litchi despite adversities.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bidyut Chandan Deka outlined AAU’s advancements in agricultural research, while Dr. Harishankar Gupta, Chairman of the Assam Agricultural Commission, stressed the importance of sustainable farming techniques to combat climate vulnerabilities. The event also saw 548 students receiving degrees, with top performers awarded gold medals.
Agriculture Minister Atul Bora called for scientific farming methods and resource efficiency to boost productivity, reinforcing the role of agriculture in Assam’s economy.
The convocation concluded with a ceremonial procession, celebrating both academic excellence and environmental stewardship.
