Eight legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP) formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi on Wednesday, triggering a major political realignment in Meghalaya. The development follows months of discussions between the legislators and BJP leadership and is set to reshape the state’s political arithmetic.
The eight MLAs who joined are Lahkmen Rymbui (Amlarem), former minister Kyrmen Shylla (Khliehriat), Olan Singh Suin (Mawsynram), Mathew Beyondstar Kurbah (Mawphlang), Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh), Pius Marwein (Ranikor), Synshar Thabah (Sohiong) and Balajied Synrem (Shella).
They took membership in the presence of senior BJP leaders. BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra addressed a press conference in New Delhi, confirming the induction.
This comes after weeks of speculation and sustained talks on the legislators’ future and key issues concerning Meghalaya. Former MLA and UDP leader Dr Jemino Mawthoh had already joined the BJP on September 12. With these additions, the BJP now has 10 MLAs and becomes the second-largest party in the Meghalaya Assembly after the National People’s Party (NPP).
The MLAs placed specific demands before the BJP leadership. These include inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, legally resuming coal mining, and securing approval for amendments to the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).
The entry of the eight MLAs is expected to have wider implications for the ruling alliance and the run-up to the 2028 Assembly elections. Political observers note that the shift strengthens the BJP’s foothold in the state and could influence future coalition dynamics.
The move marks a significant boost for the BJP in Meghalaya as the party consolidates its presence ahead of the next electoral cycle.
