Jayanta Khaund’s Shocking Exit Triggers Congress Power Surge in 2026

Jayanta Khaund Resigns from AGP, Holds Late-Night Meeting with Gaurav Gogoi and Mira Borthakur – Likely to Join Congress Ahead of Assam 2026 Elections

Guwahati, March 7, 2026: In a major political twist rocking Assam ahead of the crucial 2026 Assembly elections, senior Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Jayanta Khaund has resigned from the party after being denied the ticket for the Rongonadi Assembly constituency.

Jayanta Khaund, who had long been associated with AGP and was eyeing the Rongonadi seat, expressed disappointment following the alliance decision between AGP and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to allocate the constituency to BJP. In his resignation statement, he mentioned serving the party for many years but felt that continuing would bring no benefit. He added that he would consult the public before deciding his next political step.

The development has intensified speculation about Jayanta Khaund‘s future, with indications pointing strongly toward the Congress camp. Sources confirm that following his exit from AGP, Jayanta Khaund participated in a significant late-night meeting at the residence of senior Congress leader Mira Borthakur on Friday.

According to reliable sources, Jayanta Khaund arrived around 10 PM at Borthakur’s residence accompanied by his associates Satyabrat Kalita and Binanda Kumar Saikia. The group traveled in a vehicle with registration number AS 01 FY 0023. The discussions, held in the presence of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi and host Mira Borthakur, reportedly centered on Jayanta Khaund‘s possible induction into the Congress party.

Earlier in the evening, Gaurav Gogoi had personally contacted Jayanta Khaund over phone and extended an invitation for the meeting, underscoring the importance of these talks in shaping his political trajectory post-resignation.

Political analysts view this development as a potential setback for the ruling NDA alliance in Assam, particularly in the Rongonadi (also referred to as Ranganadi) constituency in Lakhimpur district. Jayanta Khaund‘s possible switch to Congress could bolster the opposition’s prospects in the region, especially if he contests from the same seat under the Congress banner in the 2026 polls.

As of now, Jayanta Khaund has not made any official announcement regarding his joining any party. However, the late-night engagement with top Congress figures like Gaurav Gogoi and Mira Borthakur has fueled widespread speculation that his entry into the Indian National Congress is imminent.

This shift comes at a time when Assam’s political landscape is heating up with seat-sharing arrangements, defections, and strategic maneuvers by major parties ahead of the Assembly elections. Stay tuned for more updates on Jayanta Khaund‘s next move and its implications for Assam politics in 2026.
