Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat’s bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics has started to fade, joining a growing list of defective medals from the Games. According to sources, the colour of Sehrawat’s medal has begun to deteriorate, but an official complaint has not been filed with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) yet.
This issue is not isolated, as over 100 defective medals have been returned by athletes to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee (Cojop) in just four months. The medals, designed by Chaumet, feature a hexagonal piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower and were intended to be a unique and meaningful keepsake for the athletes.
However, shortly after the conclusion of the Summer Games, various athletes took to social media to share that their medals had already started to lose their shine. Monnaie de Paris, the manufacturer of the medals, has offered to replace all damaged medals at the athletes’ request.
Sehrawat, who became the youngest Indian medal winner at the Summer Games with his bronze in men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling, has not commented on the issue publicly. It remains to be seen when or if he will file an official complaint to have his medal replaced.
