Assam Joins Nationwide Civil Defence Mock Drill Amid Security Concerns
Guwahati, May 6: Assam will participate in the nationwide civil defence mock drill scheduled for May 7, as announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The exercise follows heightened security concerns after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam (J&K), which killed 26 people.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “MHA has issued an order, but we will learn about the SoPs after the meeting.” He was referring to a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, attended by Chief Secretaries and Civil Defence officials from across India.
Key Details of the Drill in Assam:
- Category II Locations (Major Towns & Cities):
Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Goalpara, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Tezpur, Digboi, Duliajan, Guwahati (Dispur), Rangia, Namrup, Nazira, North-Lakhimpur, Numaligarh. - Category III Locations (Other Districts):
Darrang, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar.
The drill will include air raid sirens and simulate multi-hazard responses, testing emergency preparedness.
Why This Drill?
The exercise comes amid rising Indo-Pak tensions after the Pahalgam attack. The Centre aims to strengthen civil defence mechanisms nationwide, with 259 locations participating across three categories.
