AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam Sent to 4-Day Police Remand Over Sedition Charges for Pro-Pakistan Remarks

Guwahati, April 26, 2024 – Assam’s All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam has been sent to four days’ police remand after being charged with sedition for allegedly defending Pakistan and its role in the Pahalgam terror attack.

The Nagaon Chief Judicial Magistrate, Monoshreeporna Khound, granted the remand on Thursday after hearing arguments from both sides. Islam, a three-time MLA, was arrested earlier that day for making “misleading and instigating statements” in public, which went viral and were deemed capable of creating unrest.

Officials stated that his remarks were seen as supportive of Pakistan, sparking widespread condemnation. The case has intensified political tensions in Assam, with authorities taking a strict stance against statements perceived as anti-national.

Further investigations are underway as Islam remains in custody. The AIUDF has yet to issue an official response.
