Polio Vaccination Drive 2026: Assam Launches Massive National Immunization Day Campaign Targeting 45 Lakh Children

Assam’s Massive Polio Vaccination Drive 2026: Protecting Nearly 45 Lakh Children Under National Immunization Day

Guwahati: Assam is gearing up for one of its largest public health initiatives as National Immunization Day (NID), also known as Polio Sunday, kicks off today, June 28, 2026. Health authorities across the state are targeting nearly 45 lakh children aged 0-5 years for the critical oral polio vaccine (OPV) to maintain India’s polio-free status and safeguard young lives.

In Kamrup Metropolitan district, the focus is sharp and ambitious. Officials aim to vaccinate 199,591 eligible children through an intensive three-day pulse polio immunization campaign running from June 28 to June 30. This local drive forms a vital part of the statewide effort, ensuring no child is left behind in the fight against polio.

Comprehensive Coverage Planned in Kamrup Metro

To achieve full coverage, the district health administration has deployed an impressive network:

  • 860 polio booths (including 662 general, 25 difficult, 72 institutional, and 64 transit booths)
  • 37 mobile teams for hard-to-reach areas
  • 51 Medical Officers, 3,222 booth workers, and 172 booth supervisors

On Day 1 (June 28), children can receive the polio vaccine directly at designated booths. Health workers will then conduct extensive door-to-door visits on June 29 and 30 to cover any missed children, guaranteeing maximum reach.

The district-level inauguration is scheduled for 9:30 AM on June 28 at Satgaon Urban State Ayushman Arogya Mandir, marking the official start of this life-saving mission.

Statewide Push for Polio Eradication

Assam’s polio vaccination drive stands out as one of the biggest in the state, with special vaccination teams mobilized for difficult hilly terrains and remote locations. Mobile units are actively deployed to ensure even the most inaccessible children receive protection.

National Immunization Day continues to play a pivotal role in India’s public health success. The campaign supplements routine immunization by delivering essential OPV drops, building robust immunity against polio.

Parents and guardians are urged to bring children under five years to the nearest polio booth today or ensure they are covered during the door-to-door phase. Just two drops can protect a child for life.

This polio campaign 2026 highlights Assam’s strong commitment to child health. By participating actively, communities can help sustain a polio-free future for the next generation.
