Amit Shah Must Resign Over Manipur Crisis: Delhi Meetei Committee

The Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) has demanded the immediate resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, holding him responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation in Manipur. The demand comes amid reports that Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh was directed by Shah to step down during a meeting in New Delhi.

In an emergency meeting on February 9, the DMCC unanimously resolved that removing the Chief Minister alone would not restore peace in Manipur. The committee accused the Union Government of appeasing Kuki militants and failing to address repeated violations of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.

The DMCC alleged that the Centre is leveraging Kuki armed groups for geopolitical interests tied to Burma, while ignoring their attacks on Meetei villages, police outposts, and government offices. The committee also criticized the failure of the Peace Committee announced by Amit Shah in June 2023, calling it a “defunct body” that has achieved nothing.

The Manipur Cabinet had decided to abrogate the SoO pact with the Kuki National Army (KNA) and Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) in March 2023. In February 2024, the Manipur Assembly unanimously urged the Centre to revoke the agreement with all Kuki-Zo militant groups. However, the Union Government allegedly disregarded these resolutions and engaged in secret negotiations with Kuki militants, exacerbating unrest.

The DMCC also expressed concern over the removal of Manipur’s former Governor, who was actively working to foster peace among communities. The committee asserted that these actions raise serious doubts about the Centre’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring security in Manipur.

The DMCC’s demands highlight growing frustration over the handling of the Manipur crisis, with calls for accountability and decisive action from the Union Government.
