Guwahati, May 1, 2025 – Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, invoking his late father and former CM Tarun Gogoi’s words, calling Sarma the “modern incarnation of Jinnah.” The remark came in response to Sarma’s recent insinuations about Gogoi’s family and their legacy.
Political Feud Escalates
The war of words intensified after CM Sarma, in a veiled reference, urged Gaurav Gogoi to publicly affirm that his children are “Assamese and Indian citizens.” Sarma had said, “I pray Gaurav Gogoi proves me wrong by declaring his children’s Indian identity.”
Hitting back, Gaurav Gogoi tweeted, “The CM seems obsessed with my father’s legacy. Let me recall what he used to say—‘Himanta Biswa Sarma is the modern-day Jinnah.’” The statement underscores the deepening rift between the two leaders.
A History of Political Rivalry
Tarun Gogoi, Assam’s longest-serving CM (2001-2016), had initially mentored Sarma in the Congress before their fallout. Sarma’s 2015 switch to the BJP played a pivotal role in the party’s rise in Assam.
Gaurav Gogoi has repeatedly accused Sarma of abandoning inclusive policies, reigniting tensions ahead of the 2026 state elections. Political analysts suggest this clash signals a fierce battle for Assam’s political future.
