In a significant development, MP Dilip Saikia, representing the Darrang–Udalguri Lok Sabha constituency, has been unanimously chosen as the new president of the BJP Assam unit. This announcement was hinted at by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier in the day, who confirmed that the appointee would not contest the upcoming Assembly elections.
Saikia succeeds Rangia MLA Bhabesh Kalita, who held the position since June 2021. The transition was overseen by key leaders, including BJP state in-charge Harish Dwivedi, central leaders Sambit Patra and Sunil Bansal, and Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
As the BJP gears up for upcoming political challenges in Assam, Saikia’s appointment marks a significant step for the party. His experience as a Member of Parliament and national General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party will likely play a crucial role in shaping the party’s strategy in the state .
Saikia’s background includes being a former state Secretary and state organising secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Assam Pradesh. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mangaldoi in Assam in the 2019 Indian general election.
