The Assam government has launched a judicial enquiry and a police Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the Umrangso coal mine incident, which resulted in the deaths of four workers and left five others trapped inside . Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decisions, which include a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the victims.
The coal mine in the Umrangso area of Dima Hasao district was flooded on January 6, trapping nine workers inside. Rescue operations have recovered four bodies so far. The government has decided to continue the dewatering process, which is expected to take 25 to 60 days, till its ‘logical end’.
