“Apex Bank Not Run by Individuals: CM Himanta Targets Dilwar Hussain; Journalist Arrest Sparks Outrage”

Himanta Biswa Sarma defends Apex Bank’s integrity, vows action against critics; journalist Rajesh Mazumdar’s arrest draws nationwide condemnation.

Guwahati, March 31: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today lashed out at Dilwar Hussain and Mahbubul Haque, asserting that the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank is a state institution and does not function at any individual’s command. Speaking at a public event in Biswanath, Sarma accused Hussain of baseless corruption allegations and emphasized that the BJP government would take “legal action” against such critics.

“Apex Bank is Assam’s Pride, Not Dilwar’s Property”

Sarma questioned, “Just because Dilwar claims there is corruption, does it mean corruption exists?” He highlighted the bank’s modernization, including new ATMs and digital upgrades, which he claimed were ignored by Hussain and his supporters.

The CM also criticized those who “blindly believe” Hussain’s allegations, reaffirming the BJP’s commitment to “eliminate such disruptive figures.”

Journalist’s Arrest Triggers Nationwide Protests

The press conference came amid controversy over the arrest of journalist Rajesh Mazumdar, associated with The Cross Current. Mazumdar was detained while covering a protest against alleged financial irregularities in the Apex Bank.

  • First Arrest: Late Tuesday night, based on a complaint by a bank employee.
  • Second Arrest: Immediately after bail, accused of “stealing bank documents” by MD Dambaru Saikia.
  • Released on Friday after legal formalities, but the arrest sparked nationwide outrage, with journalist bodies condemning it as an “attack on press freedom.”

CM’s Stance: “Law Equal for All”

Sarma, who earlier called Mazumdar “not a recognized reporter,” stated he has no issue with criticism but warned that journalists engaging in “other activities” would face legal consequences.
