Guwahati Purple City Transformation: GMC Unveils Ambitious Kopou-Inspired Beautification Drive with Lucrative Prizes

Guwahati, May 30: Assam’s bustling capital is all set to dazzle as India’s next Purple City, adorned in the enchanting purple hues of the iconic Kopou flower, the state flower of Assam. In a groundbreaking initiative, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced a comprehensive plan to paint the city with the vibrant magenta-purple shades of the beloved foxtail orchid, creating a unique visual identity that celebrates Assamese heritage.

Mayor Mrigen Sarania revealed the exciting vision during a press conference on Saturday. The ambitious project aims to make Guwahati cleaner, greener, and aesthetically stunning, positioning it alongside iconic themed cities like Jaipur’s Pink City.

To drive community participation, GMC has launched a high-stakes Swachhata (Cleanliness) Competition across its six zones. Development committees, clubs, and women’s groups can register from June 1 to June 15. The competition will run from July 1 to August 31, encouraging participants to cover 100 to 300 households in their areas.

Scoring Breakdown (Total 150 Points):

  • Waste segregation (wet & dry)
  • Drainage maintenance
  • Plastic ban enforcement
  • Tree plantation
  • Public awareness campaigns

Special Boost: Areas painting three-lane, four-lane roadsides, and boundary walls in light purple shades matching the Kopou flower will earn a massive 50 bonus points. Mayor Sarania clarified that using the purple color is voluntary — an inspiring invitation rather than a mandate.

Prize Bonanza to Motivate Participants:

  • 1st Prize per Zone: ₹3 Lakh
  • 2nd Prize: ₹2 Lakh
  • 3rd Prize: ₹1 Lakh
  • Consolation prizes for many
  • Overall Best Performer across all zones: ₹5 Lakh Grand Prize

In a major push for sustained cleanliness, GMC will appoint 1,000 ‘Swachh Sakhi’ (Cleanliness Friends) across the city.

Important Update for Residents:
GMC is reintroducing a nominal user fee for door-to-door waste collection. From June onwards, each household will pay just ₹30 per month (previously free for the last 1.5 years; earlier ₹50).

This powerful combination of cultural pride, aesthetic transformation, and civic responsibility is expected to create a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Guwahati. The Purple City initiative not only promises stunning visuals but also aims to foster long-term behavioral change in waste management and urban pride.

Residents and local groups are encouraged to participate enthusiastically and turn this dream into reality. Stay tuned for more updates on Guwahati’s exciting journey to become the Purple City of India.
