Intense Cold Wave Grips Northeast India: Severity to Rise Over Next 5 Days, Dense Fog Warnings Issued

Guwahati, January 6, 2026 – Northeast India is reeling under a severe cold wave, with temperatures plummeting and conditions expected to worsen over the coming five days, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Borjhar (Guwahati).

The intensified cold is attributed to downward atmospheric movement over the Northeast region and sea surface, leading to a persistent cold spell across most areas. Scattered rainfall is also possible amid the chilly weather. Maximum temperatures are likely to dip slightly, while fog coverage is set to expand in several regions.

Dense fog alerts have been sounded for parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Authorities have urged extra caution during morning travel on highways and riverside areas due to reduced visibility.

Motorists are advised to use fog lights and maintain controlled speeds. The health department has appealed to residents to take precautions, especially for children and the elderly, to safeguard against the biting cold.

Stay updated for further weather alerts as the cold wave continues.
