As 2025 prepares to enter the pages of history today, this year has left us with several profound and lasting impressions—marked by moments of joy and sorrow, progress and decline, and crises of national and regional identity. In the context of Assam, the year began with a deep cultural loss. The sudden death of the beloved singer Zubeen Garg stunned the state. He was not merely a vocalist but a living symbol of Assamese cultural consciousness. His absence has created a void that will endure for generations.
On the other hand, the state advanced toward global recognition through concert tourism. The arrival of world-class artists like Post Malone and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s vision of a “concert economy” have highlighted the potential to establish Assam as a hub for cultural tourism. In contrast, the prolonged protests at Tezpur University exposed a serious administrative crisis in higher education. Allegations against the Vice-Chancellor and the extended agitation by students and faculty have raised concerns about eroding public trust in the healthy governance of educational institutions.
At the national level, 2025 confronted the harsh reality of terrorism and countermeasures. The brutal terrorist attack on innocent tourists in Pahalgam questioned the notion of a “normal situation” in Kashmir. In retaliation, India adopted a clear and proactive strategy with operations like Operation Sindoor. This mission, involving strikes across the border to destroy terrorist bases, signaled a new resolve in India’s security policy. Yet, whether these military actions can establish long-term peace remains a significant question.
In the political arena, the year began with allegations of “vote theft,” intensified by the BJP’s victory in the Bihar elections. This controversy once again raised issues of trust in our electoral processes and institutions.
2025 has brought mixed outcomes for Assam and India. On one side, we have seen cultural expansion and firmness in national security; on the other, crises in education, political divisions, and tragic incidents like the killing of innocent people have wounded our collective psyche. This year has taught us that commitment to social justice, institutional transparency, and human values is essential on the journey toward development and progress. We must carry these lessons forward into 2026, so that from amid conflict and disappointment, we can unveil a new dawn of harmony and advancement.
