Guwahati, December 17: A shocking incident unfolded at Ambikagiri Raychowdhury Hostel of Pandu College in Guwahati on Wednesday, where the body of a student was recovered from an unused bathroom. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Rubail Alam, a third-semester BSc student from Lankajan in Hojai district, who had been missing since December 12.
According to sources, Rubail’s family filed a missing person report at Jalukbari Police Station on Tuesday. The following day, his body was discovered hanging in a locked, unused bathroom of the hostel. Police suspect suicide, as the body was found in a hanging position, but an investigation is ongoing, and the exact cause will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
A police officer told the media, “The BSc third-semester student was reported missing. Today, his body was found in a closed toilet. It was recovered in a hanging state. We suspect suicide, but the investigation is continuing.”
The hostel warden stated that Rubail was present until the evening of December 12 and marked in attendance. Later, between 8:30 and 9 PM, his brother, who lives in Dubai, called to inform that Rubail had left the hostel. However, the student did not inform the warden, violating hostel rules. CCTV footage confirmed he had exited the premises.
The warden added, “He had left without permission a few times before and later apologized. We assumed he had gone home. The bathroom where the body was found was not in use, so we were unaware.
The incident has sparked outrage in the hostel, raising serious questions about students’ mental health and hostel security measures. Police are continuing the investigation and maintaining contact with the family.
