Senior Congress leaders from Assam convened at the party’s Indira Bhawan headquarters in New Delhi on Thursday to chalk out a strategy for the upcoming state assembly elections. The meeting, attended by former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, focused on uniting the party and intensifying efforts to oust the BJP from power in Assam.
Kharge, in a post on X, expressed confidence that the people of Assam would reject the BJP’s “politics of corruption, division, and vendetta” in the 2026 polls. “3.5 crore people of Assam look towards the Congress to usher in this change. No amount of select-media driven propaganda can shake their resolve for transformation,” he stated.
The meeting saw the participation of AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh, Lok Sabha deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi, and state Congress chief Bhupen Bora, among others. The leaders emphasized the need for unity and a robust campaign to challenge the BJP’s decade-long rule in the state.
The Congress has accused the BJP government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, of widespread corruption. In response, Sarma has targeted Gogoi, alleging his wife has ties with Pakistan and the ISI. The Congress has dismissed these claims as politically motivated, asserting that Gogoi is being targeted for his vocal opposition to the chief minister.
With elections to the 126-member Assam Assembly scheduled for the first half of 2026, the Congress is gearing up for a high-stakes battle. The party is also set to hold a similar strategy meeting for Kerala on Friday, as it prepares for assembly polls in the southern state.
The developments come amid internal criticism within the Congress over Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor’s recent praise for the LDF government’s investment policies, highlighting the challenges the party faces in presenting a united front ahead of crucial elections.
