PM Modi Lauds Assam’s ‘Hathibandhu’ Initiative to Reduce Man-Elephant Conflicts.

In his recent ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address on January 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Assam’s innovative ‘Hathibandhu’ initiative, which aims to reduce conflicts between humans and elephants. The project has successfully planted Napier grass across 30 hectares of private land in Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts, providing a natural solution to the ongoing issue.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to PM Modi for highlighting the initiative, stating that it has benefited around 8,000 people and helped reduce crop raiding by elephants. “This plantation ensures elephants have a ready food source and has helped in reduction of crop raiding,” Sarma said.

PM Modi also spoke about the incredible bond between humans and animals, highlighting the stories of loyalty and compassion. He noted that Nagaon, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev, is home to a large number of elephants and has witnessed several incidents of crop destruction.

The ‘Hathibandhu’ initiative is a testament to the state’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to environmental challenges. By providing a ready food source for elephants, the project has reduced human-elephant conflicts, benefiting both the local community and the elephant population.
