Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026: Henri Kagan & Kenso Soai Win for Homochirality Breakthrough

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 Awarded to Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai for Solving Homochirality Mystery

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 has been awarded to French scientist Henri B. Kagan and Japanese chemist Kenso Soai for their groundbreaking discoveries of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences made the announcement on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

The Academy stated that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 recognises work that enables chemists to drive reactions leading to homochirality — the exclusive use of one mirror-image form of molecules that underpins all life on Earth.

“Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai have provided a solution to a chemical mystery that is over a century old: how homochirality can emerge spontaneously. The chemical reactions they have developed are spectacular,” said Heiner Linke, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.

Why Homochirality Matters

Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, exist in two mirror-image forms — left-handed and right-handed — known as chiral molecules. Living organisms use only one form. Laboratory reactions, however, typically produce a 50/50 mixture. The laureates explained how nature can spontaneously favour just one version.

Kagan, born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, and affiliated with Université Paris-Sud in Orsay, and Soai, from Hiroshima and based at Tokyo University of Science, developed reactions that amplify tiny imbalances into complete preference for one chiral form through non-linear effects and autocatalysis.

Context from Recent Nobels

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 follows last year’s award to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi for molecular structure design, and the 2024 prize to David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for computational protein design. This year’s Nobel week began with the Physiology or Medicine prize for optogenetics and the Physics prize for IceCube neutrino discoveries.

The discoveries by Kagan and Soai give chemists powerful new tools and finally answer a fundamental question about the chemical origins of life. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 marks a major advance in understanding how asymmetry arises in nature.
