Explosive: INDIA Bloc’s Public Impeachment of CEC on Oct 30

INDIA Bloc Stages Explosive Public Impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar Tomorrow Over Vote Chori Claims

New Delhi, October 29, 2026: In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing battle over electoral integrity, the INDIA bloc is set to hold a high-profile Public Impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 30. The event, planned just two days before the opposition’s mega rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, aims to spotlight alleged large-scale deletions of names from electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the opposition’s long-standing charge of “vote chori.”

Opposition leaders say they were left with no choice after their attempts to move formal motions for the CEC’s removal were blocked in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Congress Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Javed told reporters that the Public Impeachment is intended to expose what the alliance calls a government formed through vote chori and to protect the constitutional right to vote. “The issue relates to rights given in the Constitution, which directly concerns the public. If the Opposition can’t flag a concern inside Parliament, it has to be done at a public place,” Javed said.

The venue for the Public Impeachment has been shifted to the official residence of Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. Police had earlier denied permission for the event at the lawns of Ashoka Hotel and later at Ramlila Maidan itself. Party insiders maintain that a demonstration targeting the central government does not require formal permission when held at a private residence of an opposition leader.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will chair the proceedings. Sources in the INDIA bloc confirmed that Kharge will move the motion against the CEC, while senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to deliver the concluding address. Around 200 opposition MPs are likely to attend, along with civil society members, activists, legal experts including former judges, and citizens who claim they were affected by the SIR exercise.

Bloc leaders held a strategy meeting on Thursday to finalise the format. Early ideas of recreating a mock Parliament or a courtroom setting were dropped to avoid unnecessary controversy. The final structure will resemble a public consultation in which various stakeholders present their viewpoints before the chair. The entire event will be broadcast live on social media platforms to reach a wider audience beyond the physical gathering.

Kerala Congress MP Francis George described the move as an extreme but necessary democratic step. “The Opposition could not do that [introduce motions for the CEC’s removal] in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha. Hence we had to take this extreme step. This is the only democratic way of flagging the actions of the CEC, who allowed the institution to be dented. The event will reiterate the charges we have been making in the past. We will seek the removal of the CEC,” George stated.

CPI Rajya Sabha MP P. Santhosh Kumar emphasised that the right to vote is a basic tenet of democracy that must be protected. “The aim is to highlight the idea in a constructive way, so the message goes across to voters. The Opposition is doing its duty by flagging such concerns,” he said.

The opposition has been running a sustained campaign accusing the Election Commission of conducting the SIR in a manner that disproportionately removed names of genuine voters, particularly from marginalised communities, allegedly at the behest of the ruling BJP. Street protests by the Indian Youth Congress in Kolkata and by CPI leaders in New Delhi have already kept the issue alive in public discourse. The Public Impeachment is designed to crystallise these protests into a single, high-visibility event that projects opposition unity.

Insiders within the INDIA bloc say the October 30 programme and the November 1 Ramlila Maidan rally together form a carefully sequenced political strategy. The Public Impeachment is meant to create immediate public awareness and moral pressure, while the larger rally is expected to mobilise street-level support and keep the narrative of electoral malpractice alive in the run-up to future elections.

Opposition leaders have made it clear that their preferred outcome remains the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. “We hope the CEC resigns and goes, but if that does not happen, removal is the only way out. The actions of the CEC were not compatible with the Constitution. Hence, a Public Impeachment to put pressure on the government,” George added.

The Election Commission has so far maintained that the SIR is a routine administrative exercise aimed at cleaning electoral rolls and that all procedures are being followed as per law. The central government has dismissed the opposition’s charges as politically motivated and an attempt to undermine independent institutions.

Nevertheless, the decision to stage a Public Impeachment marks a significant escalation in the confrontation between the opposition and the Election Commission. By choosing a format that avoids direct imitation of parliamentary or judicial processes while still carrying strong symbolic weight, the INDIA bloc is attempting to keep the focus on the substantive issues of voter disenfranchisement and institutional accountability.

Political observers note that the optics of nearly 200 MPs, former judges, and civil society representatives gathering under one roof to “impeach” the country’s top election official will dominate news cycles in the coming days. Whether the event succeeds in forcing any institutional response remains to be seen, but it has already succeeded in keeping the debate over electoral integrity at the centre of national political conversation.

As Delhi prepares for both the Public Impeachment on October 30 and the mega rally on November 1, the coming days are expected to witness heightened political activity, traffic restrictions, and intense media coverage. Traders in the Ramlila Maidan area have already expressed concerns about potential business losses and traffic gridlocks, adding another layer to the unfolding political drama.

The INDIA bloc’s Public Impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar is not merely a protest event. It is a calculated attempt to convert parliamentary frustration into public spectacle, to convert street protests into structured political theatre, and to convert technical disputes over voter lists into a larger narrative about the health of Indian democracy. Whether it achieves its stated goal of securing the CEC’s removal or simply strengthens the opposition’s campaign narrative, the October 30 event is set to become a significant marker in the ongoing battle over electoral reforms and institutional trust.
