Dibrugarh, January 25, 2025: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal criticised the Congress party’s track record of undermining the Constitution during his participation in the BJP’s ‘Samvidhan Gaurav Abhiyaan’ held here today. Sonowal paid tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in strengthening constitutional values and promoting the welfare of backward communities.
Sarbananda Sonowal said, “India owes its unity and strength as a democracy to the Constitution drafted by Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. For 75 years, the Constitution has guided a nation of diverse communities, languages, and religions, ensuring justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity for all citizens.”
Senior BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal also took a dig at the Congress party’s history of constitutional violations, saying, “Congress party has repeatedly disrespected and undermined the dignity of the Constitution. The most glaring example is the Emergency imposed in 1975 by the Indira Gandhi-led government, which suspended fundamental rights and inflicted immense harm on the nation. For Congress, family comes first, and the Constitution comes last.”
Sonowal praised leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and L.K. Advani for restoring democratic strength after the Emergency. Highlighting BJP’s ethical governance, Sonowal remarked, “In 1996, Atal Bihari Vajpayee could have extended his 13-day government by resorting to unethical practices like Congress, but he chose principles over power. This is why the BJP is distinct and trusted by the people of India.”
Sarbananda Sonowal commended Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives for the holistic development of backward communities, stating, “Under PM Modi ji’s inspiring leadership, the NDA government has ensured social justice and uplifted marginalised sections of society. Today, individuals from backward communities, like Ram Nath Kovind and Droupadi Murmu, have held the nation’s highest constitutional office as Presidents of India. This reflects our commitment to inclusivity and equality.”
Referring to Congress, Sonowal said, “Whenever Congress comes to power, it disregards constitutional values for its self-serving interests. The people of India, however, have rejected their corruption and dynasty politics through successive elections.” Sonowal added, “Under PM Modiji’s strong leadership since 2014, India has emerged as a globally respected and powerful democracy. In just a decade, the world now views India as a prominent and honourable nation.”
The event was attended by Khumtai MLA, Chakradhar Gogoi, Dibrugarh BJP President, Dulal Bora, Assam Tourism Development Corporation Chairman, Rituparna Baruah, Dibrugarh Development Authority Chairman, Asim Hazarika, Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council ChiefExecutive Member Tonkeswar Sonowal, and Housing Board Vice Chairman Subhash Dutta, among others.
