Guwahati, February 10, 2025: Assam Police have lodged an FIR against five prominent YouTubers and social media influencers for sharing explicit content from the controversial show “India’s Got Latent”. The move highlights growing concerns over the regulation of online content and its impact on public morality.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the criminal charges on February 10, citing the dissemination of obscene and sexually explicit material. The Guwahati Crime Branch has registered cases against Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, Ranveer Allahbadia, and Samay Raina under various sections of the BNS 2023, IT Act, Cinematograph Act, and the Indecent Representation of Women Act.
The legal action comes in response to widespread public outrage over inappropriate remarks made during the show. A particularly offensive question posed by Ranveer Allahbadia to a contestant, involving their parents, sparked significant backlash.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi seized the opportunity to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public endorsements of social media personalities. On X (formerly Twitter), Gogoi stated, “The Prime Minister of India must be expected to be more responsible.”
In a video statement, Allahbadia apologized for his remarks, acknowledging that his comment was inappropriate and lacked humor. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also condemned the incident, stressing that freedom of speech comes with limitations.
The show now faces multiple legal complaints, including one filed with the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, which alleges the deliberate use of obscene content for financial gain.
This incident has reignited debates about the boundaries of online content and the responsibilities of social media influencers in maintaining public decency. Authorities are under increasing pressure to enforce stricter regulations to prevent similar controversies in the future.
