Assam CM Calls for Cancellation of Bihu Celebrations Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

Guwahati, May 10, 2025 – As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, the festive spirit in Assam faces an unexpected pause. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged the cancellation of all Bihu-related events starting May 10, citing the prevailing national security situation.

In a recent message shared on X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma expressed gratitude for the joyous celebrations held across the state over the past month but emphasized the need to conclude festivities in light of the current circumstances.

“We have celebrated Bihu with great enthusiasm through numerous cultural events across Assam. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all participants. However, it is time to bring these celebrations to a close. I humbly request that all upcoming Bihu functions scheduled from May 10 be canceled,” the CM stated.

While daily life continues, border areas remain on high alert. The Assam government has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety, prioritizing national concerns over ongoing festivities.

Bihu, Assam’s most beloved festival, typically extends beyond its official dates, with year-round celebrations. However, the state now shifts focus to solidarity amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Authorities have advised organizers to comply with the appeal, ensuring a smooth transition as Assam stands united during these challenging times.
