Guwahati, March 20: As the vibrant festival of Rongali Bihu approaches, the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), commonly known as Alfa (Swa), has issued a special appeal to Bihu organizing committees and artists. The organization has requested a seven-day ban on Hindi songs during the Bihu festivities, emphasizing the preservation of Assamese cultural identity.
In a statement released on March 20, Alfa (Swa) expressed concerns over the increasing trend of Hindi songs being performed at Bihu events, which they believe dilutes the essence of the traditional Assamese festival. The organization warned of strict action if their appeal is ignored, urging Bihu committees and artists to refrain from playing Hindi songs during the first seven days of Bohag Bihu, also known as “Saat Bihu.”
The statement highlighted that Bihu, a festival deeply rooted in Assamese culture, should not be influenced by Western or non-native cultural elements. Alfa (Swa) stressed that the inclusion of Hindi songs compromises the festival’s uniqueness and its representation of Assamese heritage. The organization called upon prominent artists like Zubeen Garg, Angaraag Mahanta, and others to respect the cultural significance of Bihu by avoiding Hindi performances during the celebrations.
Bihu committees across Assam are busy preparing for the grand festivities, which include traditional music, dance, and cultural programs. However, Alfa (Swa)’s appeal has sparked discussions about the balance between cultural preservation and modern influences in the state’s most cherished festival.
As the countdown to Rongali Bihu begins, all eyes are on how Bihu organizers and artists will respond to this call for cultural integrity.
