INDI Alliance Seeks Urgent CJI Intervention in Alleged Poll Manipulation via SIR Exercise
New Delhi: In a significant escalation ahead of future electoral battles, the INDI Alliance parties on Tuesday (30 June) formally wrote to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, seeking the judiciary’s immediate intervention over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged “biased conduct” by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Sources confirmed that key signatories include the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party, and several other INDIA bloc partners. The four-page letter highlights the purported misuse of the nationwide SIR exercise to benefit the ruling party.
“We have appealed to the Judiciary because when all fails, Indian democracy looks at the Judiciary,” a senior source revealed. The letter provides specific examples from multiple states demonstrating alleged manipulation in the SIR process, along with other election-related malpractices.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh stated that the decision was taken during the INDI Alliance (INDIA Janbandhan) meeting on 8 June, attended by 21 political parties and one Independent member. The bloc has consistently raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.
At the recent meeting, five key decisions were finalized. Besides writing to the CJI, the alliance resolved to continue demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and scheduled its next meeting in Hyderabad in two months.
Why This Matters for Indian Democracy
The INDI Alliance‘s move underscores growing opposition concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Critics claim the exercise could disproportionately affect certain voter groups, potentially tilting the scales in upcoming polls. The letter emphasizes the need for judicial oversight to safeguard democratic integrity.
This development comes amid heightened political tensions, with the opposition bloc positioning itself as the defender of free and fair elections. Watch this space for updates on the Chief Justice’s response and any potential hearings on the INDI Alliance petition.
