Guwahati, December 18, 2025 – A case has been registered against Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi for allegedly disclosing sensitive details from the chargesheet in the high-profile death case of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg on social media.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death in Singapore on September 19, 2025, filed the FIR on Thursday, accusing Gogoi of sharing unverified or confidential information related to the chargesheet before its official details were public. The chargesheet, a voluminous document over 3,000 pages long, was submitted in a Guwahati court on December 12, charging seven accused with murder and related offences.
Responding to the development, Akhil Gogoi posted on social media: “I have come to know that the government has filed a case against me for making the chargesheet related to Zubeen public. I am severely ill. Even then, I will go to Guwahati tomorrow to face the case.”
Sources indicate the probe focuses on whether unauthorized copies of the document were circulated, the authenticity of the shared information, and its potential to interfere with the ongoing investigation, influence witnesses, or prejudice the trial. The SIT is also examining the source of the leaked details, the intent behind the disclosure, and the role of digital platforms in amplifying the content.
The move has intensified political tensions in Assam, with the government emphasizing the need to safeguard the integrity of the sensitive probe into Zubeen Garg’s death, which has gripped public attention since the singer drowned under suspicious circumstances.
Zubeen Garg, celebrated for hits like “Ya Ali” and his immense contribution to Assamese music, passed away at 52. The case continues to spark debates over justice and transparency.
