Guwahati, 12th December: In a significant development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has filed its voluminous chargesheet at the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati. The chargesheet, spanning over 3,500 pages, was submitted on Friday along with corroborating evidence, marking a critical step in the high-profile case.
Officials revealed that the extensive document and evidence were transported to the court in four trunks, escorted by a nine-member SIT team in a convoy of six vehicles. This underscores the scale and complexity of the investigation into the death of the iconic singer.
Zubeen Garg, a cultural icon in Assam and across the Northeast, died on 19 September in Singapore under tragic circumstances while swimming in the sea. The incident sent shockwaves through the region, prompting the Assam government to constitute the SIT, led by Special DGP M.P. Gupta, to thoroughly investigate the incident.
The investigation has been extensive. Special DGP Gupta confirmed that seven arrests have been made in connection with the case so far, and statements from more than 300 witnesses have been recorded. The findings appear to align with the strong statement made earlier by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who, during the state assembly session, described Zubeen Garg’s death not as an accident but as a “plain and simple murder.”
With the formal filing of the chargesheet, the judicial process is set to advance. The court will now examine the massive document and the attached evidence in the upcoming hearings. The contents of the chargesheet, which are yet to be made public, are anticipated to reveal the detailed findings of the SIT and the specific charges against the accused.
This development brings a sense of procedural closure to the investigative phase, as fans and the public await justice for Zubeen Garg. The case continues to be closely watched, reflecting the singer’s immense popularity and the demand for answers surrounding his untimely demise.
