Multilingual poets’ meet marks second day of Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association golden jubilee

Staff Reporter, Tinsukia, December 10: The second day of the five-day Golden Jubilee celebrations and the 24th Biennial Conference of the Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association was marked by a vibrant multilingual poets’ meet at the Doomdooma Town Field on Wednesday.
Inaugurating the session, popular Assamese poet Pranab Kumar Barman underlined the vital role of poets in shaping social consciousness. “Poets must be courageous. Without courage, one cannot be a true poet, “he said in his inaugural address. The meet was moderated by noted poet and critic Dr Ranjit Dutta.
Organised under the supervision of the Sundaram Kabi Sanmilan’, Doomdooma–Rupai, the meet featured poetry recitations by around 50 poets from across Tinsukia district in Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Sadri and other languages. The programme opened with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Indu Dutta Uzir, president of the Sundaram Kabi Sanmilan followed by a melodious Saraswati Vandana by Indrani Borpuzari.
Earlier in the day, a discussion programme was jointly organised by the Doomdooma Press Club and the Doomdooma branch of the Ellora Vigyan Mancha (EVM) in observance of ‘Anti-Superstition Day’, marked across Assam on the birth anniversary of language stalwart Hemchandra Baruah. The event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp before Baruah’s portrait by Dr Badal Kumar Ghosh, president of the EVM Doomdooma unit, and Manoj Dutta, president of the Doomdooma Press Club.
The discussion, moderated by Dr Ghosh, featured Dr Meena Devi Baruah, president of the Doomdooma unit of the Assam Science Society, as the key speaker. She delivered an incisive talk on the harmful impact of superstition and blind faith. Dharmeswar Bora, working president of the EVM Doomdooma unit, delivered the welcome address, while former secretary Tarini Deka outlined the objectives of the programme.
The evening witnessed an enthusiastic response to a singing competition based on the songs of popular artiste Zubeen Garg.
On Thursday, the celebrations will continue with flag hoisting and Smriti Tarpan, followed by a memorial programme of the departed members of the Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association. Tribute programmes will also be held in memory of Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika and the people’s artiste Zubeen Garg.
Later in the afternoon, a lecture session will be chaired by noted physician and social worker Dr Pranab Jyoti Deka. Eminent writer and Principal of Dibrugarh Hanumanbux Surajmal Kanoi College (Autonomous), Dr Sashikanta Saikia, will deliver a lecture on “Unemployment in Assam and Youth Migration to Other States.” The day will conclude with the staging of the bhaona Harishchandra Upakhyan by members of the Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association.
