Nepal Government Lifts Social Media Ban Amid Violent Protests

Kathmandu: In a significant move amid escalating violent protests, the Nepal government has announced the withdrawal of its ban on social media platforms. The decision was revealed by Information and Broadcasting Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung under Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s administration, following a late-night cabinet meeting on Monday.

The ban, imposed on 26 social media sites, had sparked widespread opposition and fueled ongoing demonstrations across the country, particularly in the capital. Thousands of protesters, largely from the GenZ demographic, took to the streets demanding the restoration of access to these platforms. The government deployed the army to contain the unrest, which has resulted in at least 24 deaths and over 100 injuries so far.

During the cabinet session, the government not only decided to lift the restrictions but also formed an inquiry committee to investigate the violent incidents. The panel is required to submit its report within 15 days. Minister Gurung emphasized that while the government stands by its initial decision to impose the ban, it is revoking it in response to the protests. He urged demonstrators to end their agitation, stating that social media access has been restored to address public demands.

The youth-led protests have plunged Nepal into a deep crisis, drawing international attention. In response, India issued an advisory on Tuesday for its citizens residing in Nepal, urging them to exercise caution and follow local authority guidelines. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of young lives. “We have been closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and express profound grief over the loss of several young lives,” the MEA said. “Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
