National Textiles Ministers’ Conference Kicks Off in Guwahati Today: Focus on $350 Billion Industry Target by 2030
Guwahati, January 8, 2026 – The much-anticipated National Textiles Ministers’ Conference 2026 begins today in Guwahati, Assam, under the theme “India’s Textiles: Weaving Growth, Heritage & Innovation.” Organized by the Union Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the Government of Assam, this two-day event aims to position India as a global leader in textile manufacturing and exports.
The inaugural session will be graced by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, along with textile ministers and senior officials from states and Union Territories across India.
Key objectives include achieving a $350 billion textile industry and $100 billion in exports by 2030, with discussions centered on policy formulation, investment attraction, sustainability, export promotion, infrastructure development, and technological advancements.
Sessions will delve into critical areas such as technical textiles, next-generation fibres, raw material supply, and the preservation and promotion of handlooms and handicrafts. Emphasis will be placed on blending traditional heritage with modern innovation, adopting eco-friendly practices, and boosting production capacity.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh has highlighted the government’s priority on massive employment generation alongside production growth. State ministers will share success stories and strategies to strengthen regional value chains.
A highlight of the first day is a special conclave titled “Strengthening and Empowering the Textiles Sector of North-East India,” focusing on local weavers, modernization of traditional crafts, women-led enterprises, and branding “Textiles from the North-East.”
The conference is expected to foster stronger Centre-State collaboration, paving the way for a sustainable, inclusive, and competitive textile sector in India. An exhibition showcasing India’s rich textile heritage and innovations will also be inaugurated today.
