Assam Police Seize Morphine Worth Rs 8.2 Crore in Cachar, 3 Arrested in Major Drug Bust

Cachar, January 10, 2025: In a significant blow to narcotics trafficking, the Assam Police confiscated 1.357 kilograms of morphine, valued at a staggering Rs 8.2 crore in the illegal market, during a targeted operation in Cachar district. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with this major haul.

The operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs. A dedicated team from Cachar police acted swiftly on the tip-off, leading to the recovery of the high-value contraband.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to announce the successful bust and issue a stern warning to drug traffickers. In a post, he commended the police force and stated, “Drug peddlers, I feel you! You imported 1.357 kg morphine worth Rs 8.2 crore, only to get busted by @cacharpolice. But you forgot one simple fact: This is Assam!”

He further emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance policy, adding, “Here, drugs don’t circulate; they get confiscated. Three arrested, drugs seized, business permanently closed.”

Details of the Seized Narcotic

Morphine is a potent, non-synthetic narcotic derived from opium. While it has legitimate medical uses for severe pain management, its illicit trade is a serious criminal offence. The seized quantity of 1.357 kg represents a significant interception, potentially disrupting a widespread supply chain.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

Police officials confirmed that the three arrested accused are being booked under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Legal proceedings have been initiated.

An intensive investigation is currently underway to unravel the entire network behind this trafficking operation. Authorities are working to trace the source of the narcotics and identify all individuals involved in its distribution.

This bust is the latest in a series of aggressive anti-drug drives undertaken by the Assam Police under the directive of the state government, reflecting a continued crackdown on the narcotics trade in the region.
