“Assam Minister Inspects Flood-Hit Guwahati; 5 Dead in Rain-Induced Landslides”

Guwahati, May 31: Assam’s Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, Jayanta Mallabaruah, surveyed multiple flood-affected areas in Guwahati today after incessant rainfall caused severe waterlogging and landslides, claiming five lives.Over the past 2-3 days, intense rainfall has submerged several parts of Guwahati, disrupting daily life. Minister Mallabaruah confirmed that three fatalities occurred in a landslide at Chapaidong, while two other rain-related deaths were reported. The minister highlighted unplanned development as a key issue, citing Juripar—originally a river turned drain due to unchecked construction. “Water from Meghalaya flows into these clogged channels,” he said, proposing a road-cum-drain solution to redirect excess water into Silsako Beel.

Disaster response teams and urban local bodies are working to clear drains, rescue stranded residents, and distribute essential supplies. Authorities have urged vigilance in landslide-prone areas and advised reporting emergencies to control rooms immediately. With more rain forecast, the administration remains on high alert to mitigate further damage.
