Assam cabinet minister Ashok Singhal has firmly refuted allegations of making negative comments about Bhaona, the traditional Assamese theatrical form introduced by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva. Dismissing the claims as “completely baseless,” Singhal accused certain media outlets of misrepresenting the situation and creating a false narrative.
In a statement posted on his X handle, Singhal clarified, “Recent claims suggesting I made negative comments about Bhaona, the unique creation of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, are entirely untrue. There is no question of me making such statements. Unfortunately, some media reports have misrepresented the situation, leading to public misconception.”
He further expressed regret if the controversy had hurt anyone’s sentiments, stating, “If this issue has hurt anyone, I sincerely apologize.” Singhal also emphasized that he has no intention of engaging in unnecessary debates on the matter.
Bhaona, a cornerstone of Assamese cultural heritage, was developed by Srimanta Sankardeva in the 15th–16th century to spread Neo-Vaishnavism through dramatized religious performances. Any perceived criticism of this art form often triggers strong reactions from cultural and religious communities.
While Singhal’s clarification seeks to quell the controversy, reactions from cultural and political groups continue to emerge. The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding Assam’s traditional art forms and the importance of accurate media representation.
