“Assam Congress Forms Probe Panel to Investigate Corruption in Panchayat Ticket Distribution”

High-powered committee to probe allegations of cash-for-tickets, irregularities; strict action warned against guilty

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has formed a high-level three-member inquiry committee to investigate allegations of corruption, financial misconduct, and internal irregularities in the distribution of party tickets for the upcoming panchayat elections.

The decision comes amid serious complaints of cash-for-tickets, favoritism, and deliberate sidelining of opposition candidates within the party. The committee, appointed under the directive of Congress state in-charge Jitendra Singh, will be headed by senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar. The other members include R.P. Sharma and Bobita Sharma.

Key Responsibilities of the Committee:

  • Investigate allegations of financial transactions in exchange for election tickets.
  • Probe irregularities in ticket distribution, including favoritism and unfair candidate selection.
  • Examine complaints of forced withdrawals and anti-party activities.
  • Submit a detailed report to the AICC (All India Congress Committee) and APCC by May 7, 2025.

Strict Action Against Guilty

The APCC has warned that any party member found guilty of misconduct will face strict disciplinary action. This move underscores the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability ahead of the panchayat polls.

The AICC is closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the need for a fair and unbiased investigation. The committee’s findings could lead to major organizational changes within the state Congress unit.

Next Steps

The probe panel has been given a tight deadline to ensure swift resolution of the allegations, with the final report expected in less than a month. The Congress leadership aims to restore public trust by addressing internal corruption before the elections.

This development highlights the growing pressure on political parties to maintain ethical standards in candidate selection processes.
