It is worth mentioning that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has returned to power in Delhi after 26 years. The Congress, once again, failed to win any seats in Delhi.

Rekha Gupta, who is set to take oath as Chief Minister, has been elected as an MLA from the Shalimar Bagh constituency. This is her first victory in an Assembly election. She defeated AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by a significant margin of 29,595 votes. Gupta has been an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since her childhood. She entered student politics through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. In 1994-95, she was elected as the Secretary of Daulat Ram College. She later served as the Secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1995-96 and was elected as the President of DUSU in 1996-97.

From 2003 to 2004, Rekha Gupta served as the Secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Delhi. She was the National Secretary of the Yuva Morcha from 2004 to 2006. In April 2007, she was elected as a Councillor from the North Pitampura Ward on a BJP ticket. After becoming a Councillor in the Municipal Corporation, she was appointed as the Chairperson of the Women and Child Development Committee from 2007 to 2009. In March 2010, she was elected as a member of the BJP’s National Executive Committee. Currently, she is the National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha.

Rekha Gupta has also been elected as a Councillor from the Shalimar Bagh Ward. However, she faced defeat in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections from the Shalimar Bagh constituency. In 2015, she lost to Bandana Kumari by a margin of around 11,000 votes, and in 2020, the margin was 3,440 votes. This time, however, Rekha Gupta has defeated Bandana Kumari by a significant margin
