The Assam government has identified 1,65,531 immigrants as “illegal” under the Assam Accord norms, with 30,115 of them deported so far, as revealed in the state Assembly on Wednesday.

In a written reply to Congress MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed, Implementation of Assam Accord Minister Atul Bora stated that out of the total detected illegal immigrants, 32,870 entered Assam between 1966 and 1971, while 1,32,661 arrived after 1971. The minister did not disclose the countries of origin of the deported individuals.

The Assam Accord, signed in 1985 following a six-year anti-foreigner movement, mandates the identification and deportation of foreigners who entered Assam on or after March 25, 1971. Their names are also deleted from electoral rolls.

Additionally, Bora informed the Assembly that the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Committee, tasked with reviewing the Assam Accord, has submitted 67 recommendations. Of these, 52 fall under the state government’s jurisdiction, and steps have already been initiated to implement them.

On the India-Bangladesh border fencing, Bora shared that 228.541 km of barbed wire fencing has been completed out of the total 267.5 km border. The fencing includes 171.507 km on land and 95.993 km in water bodies.

The Assam government continues to prioritize the implementation of the Assam Accord and border security measures to address illegal immigration.
