Zubeen Garg Murder Case: Second Hearing Underway in Sessions Court

Guwahati, January 3, 2026 – The second hearing in the high-profile murder case of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg commenced today in the Kamrup (Metro) District and Sessions Court.

The proceedings, presided over by the Sessions Judge, saw the seven accused presented virtually due to security concerns. The accused include Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya.

Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, was present in the courtroom, along with the singer’s uncle, Manoj Borthakur. Advocate Anand Kumar Bhunja appeared on behalf of accused Amritprabha Mahanta.

Currently, Amritprabha Mahanta and Shekharjyoti Goswami are lodged in Haflong Jail, while the remaining five accused – Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Nandeshwar Bora, Paresh Baishya, and Sandipan Garg – are detained in Baksa Jail.

The first hearing in the case was held in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, following which the matter was committed to the Sessions Court for trial. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had earlier filed a detailed chargesheet, slapping murder charges on four of the accused.

The case stems from Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death in Singapore on September 19, 2025, while he was there for the North East India Festival. Assam Police classified it as murder, leading to widespread public outrage and demands for justice.

Today’s hearing focused on procedural aspects, with the court expected to address further steps in the trial process. The family continues to express faith in the judiciary while calling for a swift and transparent investigation.
