8 MPs Suspense Revoked in Lok Sabha: Motion to be Moved on Tuesday

New Delhi: The 8 MPs suspense that rocked Parliament since February 3 is finally set to end. Reliable sources have confirmed that the suspensions of seven Congress MPs and one CPI(M) MP will be revoked on Tuesday after a high-level meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Congress leader K Suresh announced that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will move a formal motion at noon on Tuesday to revoke the 8 MPs suspense. The development comes after weeks of continuous demands by opposition parties during the second leg of the Budget session that began on March 9.

The eight suspended members include Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole, Dean Kuriakose (all Congress) and S Venkatesan (CPI(M)). They were suspended for the entire Budget session — scheduled to conclude on April 2 — following unruly behaviour and a resolution passed by the Lok Sabha.

At the meeting convened by Speaker Birla, both ruling and opposition sides reached a crucial agreement:

  • No member will enter the well of the House to confront the other side
  • No member will tear papers or throw them towards the Speaker or the Chair
  • No member will climb the officials’ table to register protest

Birla’s Strong Message on Parliamentary Dignity
On Sunday, Speaker Om Birla expressed “deep concern” over the use of banners, placards, posters and unparliamentary language inside the House. In a strongly worded letter to leaders of all political parties, Birla wrote that the “glorious tradition of dignified discussion and dialogue” is being undermined by some members both inside and outside the chamber. He urged party leaders to ensure strict discipline and high ethical conduct among their MPs.

The revocation of the 8 MPs suspense was the top demand of the opposition ever since the second part of the Budget session started. With the motion expected to be passed on Tuesday, normal proceedings are likely to resume without further disruption.

Why This Matters
The timely revocation of the 8 MP suspense is being seen as a major step towards restoring normalcy in the Lok Sabha during the crucial Budget session. Political observers say the new ground rules and Speaker’s appeal will help maintain the dignity of the world’s largest democracy.
