Guwahati, January 13, 2026: Renowned Assamese singer and composer Samar Hazarika, the younger brother of legendary music icon and Bharat Ratna recipient Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, breathed his last this morning, plunging Assam’s cultural fraternity into deep mourning on the auspicious occasion of Uruka, the eve of Magh Bihu.
The veteran artiste passed away at his residence in Nijorapara (Nizarapar), Guwahati, at around 8:45 AM after battling a prolonged illness. He was 75 years old and had recently been undergoing treatment at Hayat Hospital in the city before being discharged.
Samar Hazarika began his illustrious musical career in 1960 and went on to leave an indelible mark on Assamese music. Over the decades, he lent his soulful voice to numerous Assamese films, released several popular albums, and created timeless melodies that continue to resonate with generations of music lovers across the state.
Known for his emotional depth, artistic finesse, and golden voice, Samar Hazarika remained a beloved figure in Assam’s rich cultural heritage. His contributions include hit songs that evoke deep nostalgia and hold a special place in the hearts of Assamese audiences.
