Jorhat, Assam | January 2, 2026 – A joyful picnic turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a first-semester student from Jagannath Barooah College (JB College) drowned in the Brahmaputra River at the popular Baghmara picnic spot in Jorhat.
The victim, identified as Pragyashree Phukan (also spelled Pragnashree Phukan), was a resident of Na-Ali Bongal Pukhuri area in Jorhat. She was pursuing her undergraduate degree at the prestigious JB College.
According to reports, Pragyashree had gone on a picnic with a group of former school friends from Shemford School, Jorhat. The outing was organized at Baghmara, a scenic riverside location on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra, known for its picturesque views but also unpredictable currents.
Tragedy struck when Pragyashree reportedly ventured into a deeper section of the river and was swept away by the strong current. Her friends immediately attempted a rescue and even administered CPR, but unfortunately, she could not be revived. She was rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, casting a shadow of grief over her family, friends, and the academic circles in Jorhat. Authorities have once again urged picnickers to exercise extreme caution near riverbanks, especially during the winter picnic season when such spots see heavy footfall.
This tragic drowning in Brahmaputra highlights the risks associated with river picnic spots in Assam. Similar incidents have prompted warnings from local administrations in the past to avoid deep waters and strong currents.
